The world tennis number two Novak Djokovic has rallied to beat Roger Federer in a three-set battle for the Indian Wells ATP Masters title in California

Djokovic beat Federer in 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, the third set going to a tiebreaker.

It was the 33rd career meeting between the pair with Djokovic avenging a loss to 17-time Grand Slam champion Federer in the semi-finals last month at Dubai.

Federer went on to win that title, his first in nine months.

In finishing runner-up at Indian Wells, Federer will move from eighth to fifth in the world rankings but Djokovic will remain in second place, behind Rafa Nadal.

Italy's Flavia Pennetta beat world No.3 Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 6-1 to win the women's title.
