Cardiff City asked to explain huge bonus offer

The English Premier League has asked Cardiff City for an explanation after the club's Malaysian owner Vincent Tan reportedly broke the rules by offering his players a 3.7 million pound cash bonus if they avoid relegation.

The offer, which newspapers said was made before Cardiff's 1-nil loss to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, was withdrawn once Tan was told it was illegal.

The rules state that full details of a player's remuneration, including all benefits he is entitled to in cash or in kind, should be set out in a contract that must be strictly adhered to.
