Confusion surrounded the result of the madison at the track cycling world championships in Colombia before New Zealand was officially classified eighth after initially being credited with fourth.

Tom Scully and Shane Archbold were awarded fourth spot after winning the final sprint of the 200 lap race, supposedly missing out on a bronze medal by just one point.

Coach Dayle Cheatley says the official result is no surprise to him.

Scully and Archbold's efforts weren't helped when Archbold was involved in a crash which took out several riders midway through the race although he recovered to continue racing.

The New Zealand team finished the world champs with five medals - one gold, one silver and three bronze.
