U.S. ski sensation Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest Olympic slalom champion after winning the final women's race of the Alpine programme.

Shiffrin, 18 years and 345 days old but already world champion in the discipline, was fastest in the first leg and held on in the second to cross the finish line with a 0.53 second advantage.

Austria's Marlies Schild, who would have been the oldest slalom champion at 32, took silver with compatriot Kathrin Zettel winning the bronze.

Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch, the 2010 champion bidding to become the first woman to win back-to-back slalom titles, finished fourth.
