Wellington Phoenix climb to sixth in A-League

The Wellington Phoenix footballers have moved up to sixth and into an A-League play-off spot after Sunday's 3-2 win at Newcastle.

Carlos Hernandez and Stein Huysegems scored first-half goals for the visitors, but it took a 71st minute goal from substitute Jason Hicks to grab all the points.

The result also increased the Jets' winless streak to seven games.

Wellington have scored 15 goals in their past six games and coach Ernie Merrick believes that momentum and attitude could keep them in the top six.

Merrick says the mentality he's trying to instil in the boys is to start trying to score goals and, in the 93rd minute, see if you can score another one, and that's hitting home.

He says it cost them in the first 10 rounds, but if they get that mentality right, they'll cause problems for any team.

Meanwhile bottom club Melbourne Heart put a dent in Perth's challenge with a 2-1 win. The Glory have now dropped to eighth.
