A f ormer New Zealand representative and golfer of the year Anita Boon has lost her battle with cancer.

Boon, who was 36, died on Friday after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in early 2006.

She won the Marilynn Smith Trophy for New Zealand Golfer of the Year in 2001, the same year she was runner-up in the New Zealand Amateur.

A year later she led North Harbour to victory in the national interprovincials in Taranaki.

Boon first represented New Zealand in 1999 and played at the Queen Sirikit Asia Pacific Trophy in 2001 and the Espirito Santo Women's World Championship the following year.

Golfing friends and former team-mates have instigated plans to develop more opportunities for professional women golfers.

The first will be the Anita Boon women's only Pro-Am on 16 November in aid of ovarian cancer.
