Super Bowl fans crowd New York streets

The largest show on Broadway opened in New York when the city turned over a 1.2-kilometre stretch of Midtown for a "Super Bowl Boulevard" street fair, drawing thousands of locals and visitors.

The event, part of the build-up to Monday's National Football League championship game, gave fans and the simply curious a chance to see players, try their luck at kicking a field goal in Manhattan's intense wind or ride an 18-metre-high toboggan run.

Officials estimated that 1 million people would visit the site, set on 13 blocks between 34th Street and 47th Street and closed off to cars for attractions that also include a concert stage where performers such as Broadway star Michael Cavanaugh and Blondie are scheduled to perform nightly
