The former New Zealand athlete Dick Tayler says being acknowledged in the New Year's honours is a surprise as his focus has shifted to other sports.
Tayler has become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to athletics.
Famous for his courageous win in the 10,000 metres at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Chrischurch, Tayler says his sporting passion is now primarily directed towards rugby.
