Heart sack Aloisi after Phoenix loss

1:42 pm on 29 December 2013

The Melbourne Heart have sacked head coach John Aloisi, after the A-League cellar dwellers were beaten 1-nil by the Wellington Phoenix on Friday night.

Aloisi still had a year to go on his contract, but the Heart board met yesterday to decide his fate - and the club's issued a statement on their website that it was clear a decision to relieve Aloisi of the head coach's role was in the club's best interests, so his tenure as head coach has been "terminated with immediate effect".

The Heart are winless in 17 games since February and now trail the Phoenix by six points in last place.

A new interim coach is likely to be appointed by the Heart before their next game against Central Coast in Gosford next Sunday.
