Wallaby prop's career in the balance

7:45 am on 28 August 2009

The career of Australian rugby's most capped prop Al Baxter is at the crossroads with coach Robbie Deans obviously losing patience with the veteran of 69 internationals.

Baxter's been named on the bench for tomorrow night's Tri-Nations match against the Springboks in Perth, and his place at tighthead prop will be taken by rookie Ben Alexander.

Robbie Deans hooked Baxter off only half an hour into the Wallabies' 19-18 loss to the All Blacks.

The Springboks have named regular first five Ruan Pienaar at fullback for the match, replacing Frans Steyn.
