The New Zealand men's cricket team were unable to carry their strong test form into the one day series, losing the first one day international against the West Indies by two wickets at Eden Park on Boxing Day.
A poor batting display had the Black Caps on the back foot early and only a 50 from the captain Brendon McCullum and 47 from his brother Nathan helped them to 157 all out after being sent into bat.
That total was unlikely to be enough and despite career-best figures of five for 56 from the pace bowler, Mitchell McClenaghan, the visitors were able to get home thanks to a quick-fire 43 from Darren Sammy.
The second match in the five-match series is in Napier on Sunday.
