They have dismissed a Sri Lankan development team for 159, with Darryl Tuffey taking three for 41 off 10 overs.
Chris Martin picked up two for 19 off nine overs in a good spell of bowling.
New Zealand are 43 for one in reply, with Tim McIntosh not out on 20 and Daniel Flynn on 16. Martin Guptill was out for six.
