Ferrari driver Felipe Massa is in intensive care in a Budapest hospital after being hit by bouncing debris and crashing at 200kph in Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.
A fist sized spring which came off Rubens Barrichello's Brawn, hit Massa partially ripping off his visor and causing skull damage.
He appeared to have been knocked unconscious before the car left the track ploughing straight on as he headed into a corner.
Hospital staff say he's in a serious but stable condition.
Renault's Fernando Alonso claimed his first pole position for nearly two years.
