IOC says Russia's anti-gay law not against charter

The International Olympic Committee says a Russian law banning "gay propaganda" does not violate its charter and the city of Sochi would be ready to host the 2014 Winter Games.

An IOC delegation has been inspecting facilities in the Black Sea resort and says despite flooding that has turned much of the city into a muddy construction site, the "magnificent" sporting venues were already completed.

The head of the delegation, Jean-Claude Killy, has dismissed concerns about a law which bans the spread of homosexual propaganda among minors but is seen by critics as discriminatory.

The announcement's angered civil rights campaigners, who have accused the IOC of abandoning the LGBT community.

Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin says the IOC's neglected its responsibility to athletes, sponsors and fans.
