The world tennis number one Novak Djokovic believes Rafa Nadal may soon displace him at the top of the rankings.

Djokovic says the 27 year old Spaniard also has plenty of time to break Roger Federer's benchmark 17 major titles after Nadal won his second U.S. Open title in New York.

Djokovic was beaten 6-2 3-6 6-4 6-1 by Nadal, who claimed the 13th grand slam singles title with only Pete Samparas on 14 and Roger Federer on 17 now ahead of him.

Nadal's triumph gave him a 22-15 winning record against Djokovic and it was his sixth victory in their last seven encounters a remarkable achievement given Nadal having to again overcome knee problems during the past year.

Yet another hardcourt win may also quell on going comments that Nadal is solely a clay court specialist.
