The American tennis great Serena Williams says she's feeling as fit as ever after becoming the oldest US Open women's winner since the sport turned professional 45 years ago.

Williams defended her US Open title and captured her 17th career grand slam singles crown by beating Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-7, 6-1.

It moved her to within one grand slam of former stars of the game Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova for a tie for fourth place on the all-time list.

Steffi Graf has won the most in the open-era with 22.

At almost 32 Williams says she's excited about the possibilities given she's feeling on top of her game and injury free.

After the match, world number two Azarenka told reporters she believes Williams is playing the best tennis of her career.
