The Canterbury Tactix have signed the Malawi shooter Mwai Kumwenda for next year's trans-Tasman netball competition.

She will be the first player from the African nation to play in the championship.

Kumwenda has been playing in the Victorian State League competition in Australia for the past three seasons.

The Tactix lost Jo Harten to the Magic after this year's series.

The Southern Steel has bolstered its defensive ranks by signing the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic defender Erena Mikaere.

At 1.93 metres, the 25-year-old will add valuable height into the Steel squad for next season.

A member of the Magic squad for the past three seasons, Mikaere's had limited court time with Silver Ferns Casey Kopua and Leana de Bruin in the starting lineup.

The Steel has now signed 10 players for next season, including Silver Fern Jodi Brown, Jamaican international Jhaniele Fowler and New Zealand under-21 player Te Paea Selby-Rickit on attack, along with midcourters Shannon Francois, Wendy Frew and Phillipa Finch.
