The Australian tennis veteran Lleyton Hewitt is out of the US Open after a five-set fourth-round loss to Russian 21st seed Mikhail Youzhny.
The 32-year-old, the 2001 champion, was twice within sight of his first grand slam quarter-final since 2009 before Hewitt squandered a two-sets-to-one advantage and 4-1 and 5-2 leads in the fourth and fifth sets.
Youzhny will now play top seed Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals after the Serb beat Spainiard Marcel Granollers in straight sets.
