Erakovic exits US Open singles in round one

The New Zealand tennis number one Marina Erakovic has been knocked out of the singles in the opening round at the US Open in New York.

Erakovic was beaten by another unseeded player, Maria Teresa Torro from Spain, 6-0 6-4.

Defending champion Serena Williams cruised into the second round with a 6-0 6-1 victory over Italy's Francesca Schiavone.

Williams, seeking her 17th grand slam title and fifth US Open crown, needed only an hour to win for the sixth time in eight matches against the 2010 French Open champion.

Next up for Williams will be Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva, who ousted Romanian Monica Niculescu 6-4 6-3.

A British qualifier has caused the first upset in the men's draw, Daniel Evans beating the 11th-seeded Japanese Kei Nishikori 6-4 6-4 6-2.

The world number two Rafael Nadal continued his good recent hardcourt form with a straight sets win

in his opening round, the 2010 champion enjoying a comfortable 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over American wildcard Ryan Harrison.
