The New Zealand swimmer Lauren Boyle is celebrating a second bronze medal at the world championships in Barcelona.

Boyle took 18 seconds off her best time in the 1500 metres freestyle final, won in world record time by young American Katie Ledecky.

The 16-year-old took six seconds off the previous world best, set by another American, Katie Ziegler, six years ago.

The Lithuanian teenager Ruta Meilutyte won the 100 metres breaststroke gold with a time just outside the world record she set in qualifying, and the 18-year-old American Missy Franklin claimed her second gold in the 100 metres backstroke.

The outstanding men's performance of the third night of finals came from the giant Frenchman Yannick Agnel, the Olympic champion demolishing a powerful field in the 200 freestyle final.
