Widespread drug taking no shock to Armstrong

The disgraced American cyclist Lance Armstrong says he's not surprised that 18 leading riders from the 1998 Tour de France have been named by the French Senate inquiry into drug-taking in the sport.

The American said "virtually all of us" broke doping rules in those days and lied about it.

Australia's Olympic champion Stuart O'Grady has this week confessed to using EPO in the leadup to the 1998 Tour, and while Lance Armstrong's seven tour titles have been deleted from Tour de France records, the first two in the '98 Tour, Marco Pantani and Jan Ullrich have retained their podium finishes.

But the German Ullrich was found guilty last year of doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and stripped of his results from 2005 until his retirement in 2007.
