Tigers wanted Marshall to stay

Wests Tigers coach Michael Potter says he tried to talk Benji Marshall out of quitting the National Rugby League club, quashing reports that a feud between the pair fuelled the star playmaker's request for a release.

Marshall has recorded a video message explaining to fans his decision to request a release from the final two years of his contract with the club.

He said he's doing what's best for his family after a handshake agreement for a new four-year contract with the Tigers had not been honoured.

Marshall has reiterated his stance that he won't play for another NRL club and discussed the possibility of returning to the club in some capacity once his playing days are over.

Potter admitted Marshall's struggle to find top form this season has eased the pain of the star player's impending departure.
