England win opening ODI

1:03 pm on 21 March 2009

The England cricketers claimed their first international win since August in farcical circumstances when the West Indies miscalculated the Duckworth-Lewis target at the end of the opening one-dayer in Guyana.

The West Indies, who were chasing England's total of 270 for seven, were offered the chance to go off due to bad light and rain and their Australian coach John Dyson beckoned the two batsmen off the field.

The home team, however, were one run short of the Duckworth-Lewis target and with no opportunity to return to the field, England were declared winners.

The West Indies were 244 for seven after 46.2 overs.
