South Korea and USA advance in World Baseball Classic

6:27 am on 19 March 2009

South Korea have beaten bitter Asian rivals Japan 4-1 to advance to the World Baseball Classic semi-finals, while the United States also moved on by downing Puerto Rico in dramatic fashion.

The Americans scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to turn the tables on Puerto Rico with a 6-5 win.

Puerto Rico thrashed the United States 11-1 earlier in the second round.

Puerto Rico have now been eliminated.

Olympic champions South Korea scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a shaky start by hard-throwing Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish and some sloppy fielding behind him.

Japan will play Cuba today with the winner advancing to the semi-finals and the loser out of the tournament.

Venezuela have already advanced to the semi-finals.
