New Zealand's hopes of winning bowls medals at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next year have been dealt a blow, with the announcement the country's leading woman player, Jo Edwards, is withdrawing from all international play.

Edwards isn't using the word retirement, but says she'll leave the game for an indefinite period because she doesn't currently have the level of desire needed to compete at the highest levels.

The former world champion says she just doesn't feel like she can give it 100 percent for the next 18 months, leading into the Games.

Edwards has played at international level for 12 of the 17 years she has played bowls.
