New rules over high tech swim suits

Manufacturer Speedo is confident its controversial LZR Racer will be approved for this year's Rome world titles despite swimming's governing body adopting new rules to limit high-tech suits.

The LZR Racer was one of the chief contributors to the avalanche of world records last year that led to calls for suit technology to be reined in.

FINA's stipulated that suits can not be customised for individual athletes and must be limited to a maximum thickness of one millimetre and have a restricted buoyancy effect.

FINA was criticised for allowing the high-tech suits to be used at last year's Beijing Olympics and failing to provide a clear distinction between an acceptable suit and a device that enhances performance.
