President Obama comments on US sports latest drugs bust

9:37 am on 11 February 2009

The confession yesterday of the New York Yankees baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez that he'd taken performance-enhancing drugs early in his career has prompted President Barack Obama to comment on the sadness of the situation in American sport.

The President described as depressing news Rodriguez' admission that he'd taken steroids soon after signing a record 10-year contract worth 252-million US dollars in 2001 which had put him under enormous pressure.

Rodriguez joins a list of shamed baseball stars, most notably the all-time home run king Barry Bonds and star pitcher Roger Clemens.
