Smeltz blows Victory chance

10:51 am on 6 April 2013

The All White Shane Smeltz missed a penalty as his Perth Glory was knocked out of the Australian football league finals by the Melbourne Victory, who won the match 2-1 in extra time.

Smeltz had the chance to seal the win but hit the crossbar with the spot-kick, then in the last minute of normal time, Gillett adjudged Glory defender Steve Pantelidis to have pulled Victory attacker Andrew Nabbout's shoulder, awarded a spot-kick, and sent Pantelidis off for a second yellow card.

Milligan slotted home the equaliser to send the match to extra time.

But with the Glory shell-shocked, the Victory struck just four minutes into extra-time when Archie Thompson headed home from close range after a cross from Smeltz's international team-mate Marco Rojas.
