NZ Golf wrong to dismiss possible doping breach: Drug Free SNZ

New Zealand Golf is wrong in dismissing the possibility Sir Bob Charles may have violated the sport's doping protocols, says Drug Free Sport New Zealand.

Last week three-time major winner Vijay Singh of Fiji admitted to using a deer velvet spray, which contains the banned growth hormone, IGF-1.

Sir Bob has confirmed he's been using deer velvet capsules, which also contains the same hormone, for more than 20 years.

In a statement New Zealand Golf claims the amount IGF-1 in a capsule is miniscule compared to the spray Singh used, calling suggestions Sir Bob may have breached the drug code as unfounded.

But Graeme Steel, the head of of Drug Free Sport NZ, says that's not the case as if IGF-1 exists in a supplement, as it does in deer velvet capsules, it's potentially a problem.

He says his organisation has no ability to measure the true level of any component within a supplement or how that substance may be metabolised and it must therefore alert athletes to the presence of prohibited substances irrespective of levels.
