Novak Djokovic survived an almighty scare from an inspired Stanislas Wawrinka in a five-set thriller at the Australian Open to reach a 15th consecutive grand slam quarter-final.
The 15th-seeded Swiss took the opening set 6-1 and started the match with five straight service breaks, but in the end he went down 12-10 in the fifth set after just over five hours, the match finishing at quarter to four this morning.
Wawrinka blew four break points in the ninth game of the 5th set and he left the court in tears.
The Czech Tomas Berdych and the Spanish pair David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro also made the quarter-finals.
The women's second seed Maria Sharapova is through to the last eight having lost just five games in the first week, and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska continued her perfect start to the year with her 13th successive victory to set up a quarter-final with Li Na.
