The Victorian rookie golf pro Daniel Popovic is the surprise leader going into the second round of the Australian PGA championship at the Coolum resort in Queensland after a sizzling eight under par 64.
The 26-year-old Popovic, who topped this year's Australasian PGA qualifying school, has a two-stroke lead over fellow Australian Scott Strange, with the former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy one of three players a further stroke back.
Popovic revealed after the round of his life that his father was diagnosed earlier this year with incurable bone cancer.
Josh Geary is the leading New Zealander, five shots from the lead in a tie for 10th after a 69, while Mark Brown and David Smail had 71s.
