New Zealand squash player Joelle King has been beaten in five sets in the final at the China Open in Shanghai.

The 24-year-old world number 12 lost for just the second time in October, going down 6-11 11-4 3-11 11-3 11-9 to Malaysia's Low Wee Wern in the final in Shanghai.

King started well and twice went a game up, only for sixth seed Low to bounce back and level the scores, sending the match into a fifth game decider which she won after King broke her strings on a drop shot that hit the tin on the next point.

When play resumed Low quickly grabbed the last three points for victory to defend the title she won in 2010.

King returns home to join her New Zealand team to prepare for next month's Women's World Team Squash Championships in France.
