Brownlee claims World Series, Gomez wins grand final

The Spanish triathlete Javier Gomez has won the men's grand final in Auckland, while a second place finish meant Jonathan Brownlee claims the 2012 men's ITU World Series.

Brownlee, the British Olympic bronze medallist, finished second behind London silver medallist Gomez in a sprint finish on the final run leg, after Brownlee was part of a two-man breakaway in the swim leg.

Gomez and Brownlee had to first haul in New Zealand's retiring Kris Gemmell, who made a break during the bike leg and had a lead of almost one minute going into the run.

Both Brownlee and Gomez showed their class in the running leg though, and easily hauled in Gemmell as the race went down to a sprint in the final 100 metres.

Gomez, not known for his sprinting, fought hard to hold off Jonathan Brownlee and claim the grand final win.

Jonathan Brownlee succeeds his brother Alistair as world champion and says it's good to keep the title in the family.

Brownlee says if at the start of the year you'd offered him and his brother Olympic gold and bronze medals and the world title for himself too, he would've taken that.

Ryan Sissons was the best-placed New Zealander finishing 11th, while another athlete bowing out of the shorter form of multisports, Bevan Docherty, was 14th.

Gomez appears unbeatable in New Zealand after he added the men's grand final to his collection of victories here.

Gomez also won the under-23 title back in 2003 in Auckland and won the World Cup five years later in New Plymouth too, and the Spaniard is promising to return if Auckland, as expected, is granted the opening leg of the series next year.

Gomez says it's nice to be in a country where everyone knows triathlon and it's a bigger sport.

The Swiss Sven Riederer took third on the day, while Ryan Sissons had the best placing for the New Zealanders, finishing 11th, Bevan Docherty was 14th, Clark Ellice placed 19th and Gemmell was 20th.
