Johns surprised to be 8th immortal

5:54 am on 28 September 2012

Andrew Johns was genuinely blown away by the sight of his image appearing on the Sydney Harbour Bridge last night, signalling his selection as Australian rugby league's 8th immortal.

The former Newcastle halfback leapfrogged Norm Provan, Ron Coote and Mal Meninga for the honour, joining Bob Fulton, John Raper, Clive Churchill, Reg Gasnier, Graeme Langlands, Wally Lewis and Arthur Beetson on the illustrious list of Immortals.

There had been question marks as to whether Johns was worthy of the award in light of admissions in his biography of frequent recreational drug use and alcohol abuse, but he feels the game's forgiven him.

He was chosen by 18 judges, including the five living Immortals, and league personalities including coach Wayne Bennett and radio presenter Ray Hadley.
