Northland has pipped Tasman with a late penalty goal in their provincial rugby championship clash, the Taniwha winning 20-17 in Blenheim.
Northland second five Derek Carpenter scored before half-time after the visitors finally got some phases together, but they should have led by more than 10-3 at the break after bombing several tries.
The Makos took the lead midway through the second half as lock Filipo Levi crashed over but an impressive try from Northland wing Mateo Malupo levelled the scores before his first five Ash Moeke slotted the winning penalty with time almost up.
