The New Zealand triathlete Bevan Docherty has finished third on debut at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Las Vegas.

The two-time Olympic medallist made his move early on the run to push up to second place run before being passed by the defending champion, Craig Alexander of Australia.

Docherty held on strongly to finish third in the blazing heat, with temperatures soaring to 37 degrees Celsius.

German Sebastian Kienle claimed an upset victory from Alexander.

The seven-time Ironman New Zealand women's champion Joanna Lawn repeated her place from the tough Las Vegas course last year, finishing in fifth after running through the field from 10th off the bike.
