Belarus sticking by disgraced Olympic champion

5:43 pm on 14 August 2012

Belarus if refusing to accept Valerie Adams as the new Olympic shot put champion, despite the International Olympic Committee's stripping Belarussian Nedzeya Ostapchuk of the gold medal.

Ostapchuk was disqualified after testing positive for steroids at the London Games.

The Belarussian Telegraph Agency is reporting Belarus still recognizes Ostapchuk as Olympic champion.

The deputy sports minister Cheslav Shulga says a mistake or misundertanding may have happened as he says Ostapchuk had a clean drug test late last month.

Nine weeks before the London Games Adams and Ostapchuk competed against each other with Adams throwing just over 21 metres while the Belarussian threw 19.58m.

Six weeks later in Minsk she threw 21.58m, a two-metre improvement.

Adams former coach Kirsten Hellier says that certainly raised a few eyebrows.

It's the second time in the past three Olympics that the women's shot put champion's been stripped of her title.

A Russian athlete was disqualified at the Athens Games in 2004 where Valerie Adams finished eighth.
