It's hardly any consolation but the Australian golfer Adam Scott has improved 7 places to number 6 in the world rankings after his late collapse to finish runner-up to Ernie Els yesterday at the British Open.

The champion Els jumped 25 places to 15th in the rankings.

Tiger Woods, who tied for third at Lytham, is up to number two behind England's Luke Donald.

After his tie for 19th at the British Open, New Zealand's Steven Alker has jumped more than 270 places to 516th.
