New Zealand runner Nick Willis has smashed his own national 1500 metres record as he finished third in a very quick race at the Monaco Diamond League meeting on Saturday morning.
Willis ran three minutes 30.35 seconds, taking almost a second and a half off his mark - which he ran at the same meeting in Monaco last year.
The time is also an Oceania record, beating the time of three minutes 31.06 seconds set by Australian Ryan Gregson in 2010.
The race was won by Beijing Olympic and world champion Asbel Kiprop from Kenya in the world's fastest time for 2012 of three minutes 28.88 seconds, followed by fellow Kenyan Nixon Chepseba in three minutes 29.77 seconds.
Willis' result comes two weeks before the London Olympic 1500 metres heats.
The other New Zealander competing in Monaco, javelin thrower Stuart Farquhar, was sixth in a seven-man field, just over seven metres behind the Ukrainian winner Oleksandr Pyatnytsya.
