Former All Black Sir John Kirwan has been appointed the new head coach of the Blues Super Rugby side.

Kirwan has signed a two-year contract and takes over from Pat Lam who had been in charge for the last four years.

Kirwan, who's 47, played 142 games for Auckland and 63 tests for the All Blacks before embarking on an international coaching career in Italy and more recently, Japan.

He also had a brief stint with the Blues franchise in 2001 as assistant coach.

Under Lam, the Blues managed the Super Rugby play-offs just once and this year finished 12th overall with a record of four wins and 12 losses.
