OFC sports TV under discussion

4:13 pm on 13 July 2012

A proposal is being discussed for a new free-to-air national sports television channel.

Radio New Zealand can confirm a working group involving a number of national sports organisations has met with the Oceania Football Confederation about its idea, which involves producing sports coverage more cheaply than Sky Television and providing some real competition to the virtual monopoly Sky exerts in New Zealand.

The OFC, which is backed by football's rich world governing body FIFA, is understood to also be talking with free-to-air television provider Freeview.
