Brisbane win bruising battle over Warriors

11:35 am on 14 July 2012

The Warriors' National Rugby League playoff hopes have taken a hit with a 10-8 loss to the Broncos in wet and slippery conditions in Brisbane.

The Broncos narrowly won the 80-minute grind largely thanks to five-eighth James Maloney missing all three of his shots at goal.

But the Warriors almost pulled off a stunning last play in the dying seconds before fullback Josh Hoffman dragged down giant Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei who flung the ball back infield to Maloney, who with the siren blasting in the background, put a crossfield kick into the left corner which Brisbane winger Gerard Beale only just managed to bat over the dead ball line as a miracle try loomed large.

The Warriors now probably have to win six of their seven remaining games to even begin to match last season's stunning run, when the Auckland side won seven from nine then went all the way to the final.

Elsewhere, the Bulldogs sealed their seventh straight victory with a 32-12 win against Parramatta at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.
