The Chiefs hooker and Samoan Rugby World Cup 2011 captain Mahonri Schwalger has signed with the Counties Manukau Steelers ITM Cup team for the next two years.

The 32-year-old says he's impressed with what coach Tana Umaga is trying to achieve at Counties Manukau and he thinks he can add value to that.

Umaga says the signing of Schwalger is a huge boost and his leadership qualities and skill set will be hugely important in the development of their young talent.

Schwalger has played in three Rugby World Cups and captained Samoa in their historic win against the Wallabies in 2011.

He has also played for the Highlanders, Hurricanes, Llanelli Scarlets and Sale Sharks..
