The co-owners of the NBA basketball team the Philadelphia 76ers have bought Major League Soccer's DC United.

The four-time MLS Cup champions are trying to have the US capital build a new football-specific stadium such as those many other cities have constructed to house MLS clubs.

Erick Thohir, a media and entertainment magnate in Indonesia, and Jason Levien, a former sports agent and Sacramento Kings executive, will serve as managing partners and keep Kevin Payne as club president in charge of day-to-day operations.

Thohir is a vice president of the Indonesian Olympic Committee and its chief of mission for the London Olympics.
