Socceroos star Harry Kewell has reportedly quit the Melbourne Victory, citing personal reasons for leaving the A-League club.

Kewell was on the verge of signing a new two-year contract, in excess of $US1 million a season, but is reported to have made the stunning decision to reject Victory's offer for family reasons.

It's understood the mother of Kewell's wife, Sheree Murphy, is gravely ill and he has chosen to stay by her side in England.

In May Kewell activated a clause to terminate his original incentive-based three-year contract at the end of the 2011-12 season.

Negotiations then began for a new two-year deal.

The 33-year-old former Leeds United, Liverpool and Galatasaray star signed with Victory amid great fanfare last August.

He scored eight goals in 25 games in his only A-League season.
