The New Zealand Rugby Union has confirmed Sonny Bill Williams has made a decision on his future.

It's understood the Chiefs star will take a rugby sabbatical in Japan at the end of the year before returning to the National Rugby League to play for the Sydney Roosters in next year's competition.

Although he wouldn't go into the details of what the All Blacks midfielder will be doing from 2013 the chief executive of the NZRU, Steve Tew, says the second five has made up his mind.

Tew says if Williams does return to rugby league it would be a great loss for New Zealand rugby.
