Campbell beaten in British Amateur

The Masterton amateur golfer Ben Campbell has been beaten in the first round of the 117th British Amateur Championship at Royal Troon.

The New Zealand No.2, who has finished runner-up twice in the Australian Amateur, was beaten at the 20th hole in what was a great battle with American Tyler Raber.

Campbell is ranked 152 in the world and was the only New Zealander to progress to the match play stages of the event.

It is a disappointing result for the NZ contingent contesting The Amateur Championship with the hope the event would provide good international competition ahead of the Eisenhower World Team's Championship in Turkey in October.
