Rising cricket star tragically killed

11:52 am on 19 June 2012

The Surrey country cricketer Tom Maynard, regarded as one of England's most promising batsmen, has died at the age of 23, after being struck by a London Underground train.

Metropolitan Police said he'd run away after being stopped for driving "erratically" near Wimbledon Park station, before being hit by the tube train in the early hours of the morning.

Maynard was the son of the former Glamorgan and England batsman Matthew Maynard, who is now coaching in South Africa.

It's the third time in 15 years Surrey were mourning the passing of a young cricketer after both Ben Hollioake, an England all-rounder, and wicket-keeper Graham Kersey died following car crashes in Australia.
