All Whites make next stage of Oceania World Cup qualifying

6:02 pm on 4 June 2012

The New Zealand men's football team has beaten Papua New Guinea 2-1 in Honiara to seal a semi-final spot at the Oceania Nations Cup.

The All Whites' second victory also seals qualification for the final stage of Oceania World Cup qualifying from September to March, after pool rivals Fiji and the Solomon Islands played out a scoreless draw.

The New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz headed home the opener against Papua New Guinea in just the second minute and also supplied the assist for fellow marksman Chris Wood just after half-time.

Papua New Guinea scored a penalty for a Tony Lochhead handball with three minutes left to make it an anxious final few minutes before the final whistle blew.

The All Whites next play the hosts on Wednesday. The semi-finals are on Friday with the final on Sunday.
