Rugby World Cup loss less than expected

Rugby World Cup organisers have posted a tournament loss $8 million less than forecast.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 has announced a loss of $31.3 million for last year's tournament.

RNZ 2011 was a joint venture between the government and the New Zealand Rugby Union.

It had been agreed two thirds of the tournament loss would be covered by the Government and one third by the Rugby Union, with the NZRU's share of the loss capped at $10 million.

RNZ 2011 chairman Brian Roche says very few global sporting events come in under budget and to post a significantly better result than expected is an extraordinary achievement.
